Head of Mission Returns to the
States
Proofreader ÒElderÓ Kenneth Allen and his
wife Susan Allen Return to California
By Holly Fox
As
a young adult, Susan Allen always wanted to go on a mission for the LDS
(Mormon) Church. But beau Kenneth Allen convinced her to marry him with
the promise that they would serve a mission together later. Thirty-five
years later, as soon as their youngest son left the house (to serve his
mission), they offered their talent and foreign language skills and were sent
to the Institute Center for Young Adults at the LDS Church here in Hamburg.
Elder
Allen, a patent lawyer from Palo Alto, California, who his wife describes as
Òso nit picky about grammar,Ó soon found a copy of The Hamburg Express. He volunteered to
proofread it as a service project and has done up to thirty articles every
edition since.
At
the Center, he and his wife, have been involved in a variety of programs and
events for young adults of all faiths, including weekly religion classes,
English and German language classes, movie nights and dance nights, and have
worked to provide Òa home away from homeÓ for the hundreds of young people who
come by.
Anxious
to return home to their children and grandchildren after 19 months, they are
still sad to be leaving their ÒkidsÓ here in Hamburg.
